Bonjour tout le monde

Many of you have asked me for tips on how to learn French.Firstly, as I have said before, learn the vocabulary most relevant to you, the words you will use most often.

Post-its of key words are a great idea. For example, if you are learning the days of the week, stick a post -it each day on the fridge, mirror, tv, etc with the name of today’s day.

Name things around the house in French, either with labels, in your head, or aloud. If you see ‘l’ordinateur’ written on the computer and say it to yourself or aloud, you will learn it  more quickly than from a word list.

Look up words you don’t know and then try to use them as soon as possible when they are still fresh.

Buy a French CD  [eg a Junior cert or Leaving cert one ]and play it regularly.

Look up French web-sites on whatever subject interests you. It is easier to read a French article  if you already know a little about the topic. Some useful sites are:

www.lemonde.fr      [News]

www.phosphore.com    [For teenagers]

www.studiomagazine.fr   [Cinéma/Télévision]

www.lequipe.fr      [Sport]

Above all, enjoy the classes, enjoy learning French.  I know some of you have to do exams this year but remember that you are not just learning French for school, it is not just another subject, but it is something you will have forever, to use, to enjoy for many years to come.

A bientôt

Ann

Are you looking for an Adult French class in the Greystones, Bray, Wicklow area?

A new Adult French class, for adults who have not spoken French in years, begins on Thursday September 16th 2010 at 7pm. The cost per 10 week term is 160 euro.

This will be a small group conversation class. A limited number of places remain. Contact me at  ann@greystonesfrench.ie  or by phoning 01 2876406.

Did you know that almost half of the total marks [ie 45% ] in the Leaving Cert go for Speaking [the Oral exam] and listening [the Aural exam ]? And that 43% of the Junior Cert marks are given for listening?

These are very difficult sections to prepare well for , especially in a classroom situation, as they require hours and hours of practice.

One of the very best ways of improving for the Oral and Aural exams is to spend time in France, not on a family holiday, not with a group of English-speaking friends, but really living in France, in a French school or with a French family.

Spending a term, a month, or even a fortnight in France, speaking French, hearing French spoken all around you, is an excellent way of learning the language.

The main reason to spend time in France on an exchange programme or in a school is obviously to learn the language. But there are many other benefits.

Living in France makes you step out of your comfort zone, go new places, eat new foods, try new things [One of my students learned to ski with his exchange family! ] It is not just about travelling abroad but living abroad, learning about a different culture, doing things in different ways.

Taking part in everyday French life requires initiative , commitment, adaptability, all of which make you more mature, more open to new challenges back home.

Many students form long-lasting ties and friendships in France. I still keep in contact with the French girl [now lady!] with whom I did my first French exchange many years ago!

Why not consider organising a French exchange this year?  Every one of my students who has spent time in  France has come back speaking and understanding the language much better and they have all had some really memorable experiences.

Allez, Allez, Allez vivre en France un peu!

Bonjour tout le monde.

Why learn French?

The top reason for learning French is to communicate with French people, especially on holidays.

Did you know?

French is spoken by around 200 million people in over 40 countries on 5 continents. That makes a lot of new people to talk to!

Top tip for learning French:

Learning French is like climbing a high mountain. You have to take it little step by little step. Start by learning  the French that is most relevant to you.

A child might learn frites, chips, guimauve and toboggan [Not all what they look like in English!]

A racing driver should know the difference between his auto and his moto.

A doctor will learn about tension and pression.

A wine drinker should learn that une bouteille à vin is not the same as une bouteille de vin.

And everyone should learn that whether the French say Au revoir or A bientôt, they both mean ‘Until I see you again soon’

So, for now,

A bientôt tout le monde.
